Metal studs, the apartment specific bit
Many apartments and newer builds use metal studs rather than wood. They are thinner, hollow, and you cannot simply drive a lag bolt into them and trust it.
Mounted properly, with toggle hardware rated for the load, a metal stud wall holds a TV perfectly well. Mounted with the wrong hardware it is genuinely unsafe. We carry the right anchors and we check what is behind the drywall before choosing them, rather than assuming.
If you are unsure what your walls are, a magnet will find the screws holding the drywall on either way, but the sound and feel differ. We will confirm on the day.
Keeping wall changes to a minimum
If you want the least invasive install possible:
- A fixed mount uses the fewest fixings and sits flattest to the wall
- Skip the raceway and let us dress the cables neatly down the wall instead, which uses no extra fixings
- Choose a wall where the TV position is obvious, so nothing gets moved and re drilled
- Keep the mount and its hardware in a bag somewhere, you will want it at move out
Patching when you move out
Anchor holes in drywall patch easily. Filler, a scrape flat, and a touch of matching paint handles it, and it is a job most people do themselves in an afternoon.
Holes in metal stud toggles are the same size and patch the same way. Take a photo of the wall before the TV goes up, it makes matching paint later much easier.
